Hello,

I am @TheDefiant604, administrator of the new Canadian Mastodon Server at canada.masto.host/

I gave up Facebook in the middle of 2019, after being harassed a second time. Originally, I was just going to take a break, but then the false ads and untrusted fact checkers convinced me their time is done.

I still use Twitter, mostly just to keep up with events.

(p.s.: I am not Native, I just really like the Native version of the flag.)

History repeats itself only if one does not listen the first time.

Mastodon's Founder Says Trump's New Social Network Is Just Mastodon

'Truth Social', which will launch officially later in the year, is seemingly using Mastodon's codebase without credit.

Former President Donald Trump鈥檚 new social network 鈥橳ruth Social鈥 is seemingly a thinly disguised fork of popular social network codebase Mastodon.

Its terms also say that 鈥渁ll source code鈥 of Truth Social is proprietary. That might run afoul of Mastodon鈥檚 own license.

鈥淭he main thing is that Mastodon is free software, released under the AGPLv3 license, so anyone can use it鈥攑rovided they comply with the license. The main part of the license is making the source code and any modifications to it available to the public,鈥 Rochko told Motherboard. With Truth Social saying that its code is proprietary 鈥渢hat would be a problem, as that would indicate a license violation,鈥 Rochko added.

TruthSocial, Fediblock, pol adjacent

As you may have seen in the news today, Trump's media team has set up their own social network "Truth Social".

What they aren't admitting is it's actually just a Mastodon instance with all the Mastodon branding removed, including all of the messages acknowledging that it is FOSS, as required by the software's free open source licence. This is breaking the terms of the licence, and is essentially stealing the software from the volunteer community which made it.

This kind of behaviour cannot be accepted by anyone who believes in FOSS. Keeping to the requirements of a FOSS licence is fundamental to building software together. If powerful people get away with stealing FOSS, people may be reluctant to build FOSS in the first place.

Hopefully someone will take legal action, but in the meantime we can block these instances in case they try to federate:

I will get a great amount of pleasure if I see the mastodon project sue trump, make a bunch of money, get him to shut down his server, and then use that money to improve the network/project.

If you're very confident running your own server, you can self-host your own instance of any Fediverse platform.

Here are some installation instructions for advanced users:

Friendica (Facebook alternative)
friendi.ca/resources/installat

FunkWhale (music and podcasts)

PeerTube (YouTube alternative)

PixelFed (Instagram alternative)

If you're not an advanced user, or if you don't like doing server maintenance/installation, try one of the easier options mentioned in previous posts in this thread.

What's really... cool, I guess, is that I could scroll through posts behind the notifications

Well, isn't this an interesting "undocumented feature." I expect it's with the mobile app @Tusky

I was on the notifications tab and pressed my phone's back button. This is what happened:

Seems like an interesting effort. Rather US-centric, but still a good place to start.

If you're used to centralised networks like Facebook, you may be wondering why Mastodon and the Fediverse are spread across thousands of sites. Why not just have a single site where people sign up?

There are many important reasons, but maybe the most important is this:

Networks on single sites tend to be bought by bad people when they get popular 馃槧

It happened to Instagram (bought by Facebook), it happened to Whatsapp (bought by Facebook), it happened to YouTube (bought by Google). It can happen to ANYTHING built entirely around one site.

No matter how much you trust the people who run a site, when someone offers them billions of dollars they may just take the money.

Decentralised networks, where there is no central site, are much more resistant to buyouts.

No one owns the global email network, thousands of indie players like @Tutanota and @protonmail are able to offer alternatives, and if one provider behaves badly you can switch to a different provider.

Remember kids, tolerating intolerance is not tolerance.

How the heck do I get to server administration on the web version? There's a pending account, and I cannot find any link anywhere to get to server administration! I found it buried somewhere last time, but I don't remember where or how...

Trump or no Trump, Canada's relationship with the U.S. isn't going back to 'normal' soon

It's no surprise that two Canadian academics recently proposed dusting off the "third option" doctrine that Pierre Trudeau's government developed in the 1970s 鈥 the last time the United States seemed to be coming apart.
