I am @TheDefiant604, administrator of the new Canadian Mastodon Server at

I gave up Facebook in the middle of 2019, after being harassed a second time. Originally, I was just going to take a break, but then the false ads and untrusted fact checkers convinced me their time is done.

I still use Twitter, mostly just to keep up with events.

(p.s.: I am not Native, I just really like the Native version of the flag.)

Taking a break from the Fediverse for a couple of months. Will re-evaluate participation in the Fediverse upon return.

I really believed this would be different. I could have stayed on Facebook to be attacked for innocent comments. Not that I want to be on Facebook.

May you find peace in the new year.

PeerTube instances can be a bit hit and miss, some of them are completely unmoderated and full of awful content.

However, there are some really nice useful PeerTube instances with excellent admins, for example:

You can also follow accounts from PeerTube through Mastodon, just click on "subscribe" within PeerTube. You can also subscribe via RSS if you prefer.

Do you have posts you want people to see when they look at your Mastodon profile?

You can pin posts to the top of your profile by going to the post, clicking "..." and then "Pin on profile".

You can pin many posts at once on Mastodon, but be careful not to overdo it as more pinned posts means more scrolling to see the latest post.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Mastodon, is in fact, the Fediverse, or as I've recently taken to calling it, the ActivityPub-Fediverse. Mastodon is not a singular network unto itself, but rather a subnetwork of a greater "federated universe" - the Fediverse - realized by thousands of independent, live servers, each running an instance of one of an ensemble of platforms, all of which interoperate via the ActivityPub protocols.

Many Mastodon users surf a particular impression of the Fediverse every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the fraction of the network which is most widely used today is called "Mastodon", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the Fediverse, equally inhabited by users from other non-Mastodon servers.

There really is a Mastodon, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the Fediverse they use. Mastodon is an ActivityPub server for microblogging. Mastodon is an essential part of the Fediverse, but limiting by itself. The Fediverse experience manifests in the context of a complete network. Mastodon distributes content in combination with other ActivityPub servers. The whole network is basically ActivityPub servers with Mastodon being the most common; The so-called "Mastodon network" is really the Fediverse network.

The Fediverse relies on users to report anything which breaks the rules, so that instance administrators can take action. (For example, spam, doxxing, hate speech etc.)

You can report a post by clicking on the "..." below it and selecting "Report".

This report goes to your home instance's admin, who can then block the account from that instance.

You can optionally also send the report to the admin of the poster's own instance. If it breaks their own instance's rules too, their admin may delete the poster's account, removing it from the entire fediverse.

Toggle the switch below your report to do this.

CDC is tracking the spread of the Omicron variant of the virus that causes #COVID19.

Here’s what you need to know about the #OmicronVariant:

Coronavirus, worldwide.

Cases: 266 million

Deaths: 5.27 million

If you're new here, you may be wondering what the Fediverse is.

The Fediverse is a collection of alternative social networks which share a common technical standard called ActivityPub.

The importance of this is that it lets people on one network interact with people on another network. For example, if you're on Mastodon you can follow and interact with people on PixelFed and vice versa.

This is a very powerful concept in social media, and something you cannot do on commercial centralised networks like Facebook, Instagram or Twitter.

The reason this is possible is because the Fediverse uses co-operative free open standards instead of trying to trap people in "walled gardens".

This collaboration means that whenever one Fediverse network gets more users, it also increases the audience for all the other Fediverse networks too.

This allows tiny community-based servers run by volunteers to reach millions of people around the world. It's giving us back control.

Materialistic values cannot give us peace of mind.
So we really need to focus on our inner values, our true humanity.
Only this way can we have peace of mind—and more peace in our world.

Bob Marley quotes

I remember reading an article that said the average person lives in 11 homes in their lifetime.

This is my third. The first, I was so young when we moved, I barely remember the house or the move. I was in the last house for 38 years. That's a lot of memories.

I'm also fairly certain the 1-800-GOT-JUNK people took my Sega Genesis.

Free Software is what runs most of our digital infrastructure and our devices. The Internet heavily relies on its innovations and accessibility.

First night in the new home; first morning...

I don't know how I feel about it yet, because I'm still a frayed bundle of nerves over last second panic packing that resulted in two nights without sleep, because of packing.

I'm also worrying about whether or not the spirit of my deceased cat came with me. I brought her urn, paw prints and scrapings of dirt buildup from the corners of walls that she rubbed against, as one of the last trips, but did she come, too?

This feels weird.

There are only two ways to live your life
One is as though nothing is a miracle
The other is as though everything is a miracle.
